Joseph L. Grucci was born in Pittsburgh, May 23, 1908, sometimes reported as 1911. He attended Penn State and the Universities of Alabama and Pittsburgh, where he taught before joining the Penn State faculty. During World War II, he served with the 63rd Infantry Division in Europe. At the end of the war, he was assigned to teach at the American University of Shrievenham, England.
